Apo sends Marist to title game in second OT.

Byline: Adam Jude The Register-Guard

Even as the ball inched closer to the net, Marist goalie Jessie Copley had no doubt.

"Honestly," she said, after stretching to make a late save, "I knew from the start our team had it."

It was only after 100 minutes that the Marist girls soccer team could make it official.

"I've never felt anything like this before," said Copley, a sophomore.

The final whistle set off a rowdy celebration for the Sky-Em League champion Spartans, who danced and chanted chant

"This has been our goal all year - to win state. And we made it," first-year coach Chris Linkhorn said. "We made it as difficult as possible today, but I'm really excited for the kids."

With the score tied 1-1 after regulation and the first overtime, La Salle nearly sneaked a header (1) In a disk or tape file, a set of data that resides permanently at the beginning. Marist senior Brigitte Stager lofted a free kick into the box in the 93rd minute. La Salle goalie Dolores Dolores (or Delores) was a common given name (until the 1960s in the USA); it is cognate with the English word "dolorous" (meaning sorrowful) and equivalent in meaning.  Lyons initially had control but bobbled it to the ground.

Apo sneaked up and punched it in to give Marist the 2-1 lead.

"It was an error off the goalie, but I'll take anything," Apo said. "She came up, missed it, and I just kicked it right in."

Less than a minute later, La Salle (13-2-2), the No. 2 seed from the Capital Conference, had a chance to answer after an unfortunate touch by a Marist defender, whose attempt to clear the ball spun back toward the bottom right corner of the net.

Copley again reacted quickly, getting one hand on the ball, touching it out of bounds.

"That was very close. I think I pulled a rib muscle; it was such a big stretch," she said. "What made it even worse was it was one of our own teammates. I was like 'There's absolutely no way this ball is going in.' "

The Spartans survived the final 15 minutes of regulation and overtime without center midfielder

Marist opened the scoring in the 60th minute after Apo sent a cross toward the box. Freshman McKinley Dennis made the initial touch to get the ball past Lyons, the La Salle goalie, and Kayla Braud followed up with the final touch into the net.

La Salle scored the tying goal in the 75th minute when Laura Schmitt assisted Kelsey Harris.
