Aphton Appoints James F. Smith, CPA, to Board of Directors.

MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 30, 2004

Aphton Corporation (Nasdaq:APHT APHT Advance Physical Test ) today announced the appointment of James F. Smith, CPA (Computer Press Association, Landing, NJ) An earlier membership organization founded in 1983 that promoted excellence in computer journalism. Its annual awards honored outstanding examples in print, broadcast and electronic media. The CPA disbanded in 2000. , as an independent director. This addition, along with the appointment of Patrick Mooney, M.D. to the Board of Directors, expands Aphton's Board of Directors from 6 to 8 members. Mr. Smith has also been appointed as a member and Chairman of the Audit Committee. The Board of Directors has designated Mr. Smith the financial expert for the Audit Committee in accordance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act See SOX.  and the rules promulgated prom·ul·gate

Mr. Smith is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants With over 330,525 CPA members (in August 2006), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) is the largest professional organization of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) in the United States of America. , and is currently the Vice President and Global Controller of Ansell (Healthcare) Ltd. At Ansell, Mr. Smith has actively led initiatives to improve financial forecasting and led the financial function's participation in a significant strategic review and opportunities assessment of the business. Mr. Smith has over 30 years of experience in accounting and finance.
