Apelon Announces Next-Generation Healthcare Content Tagging Tool; Software Brings New Power To Content Tagging and Data Mining.

Business Editors & Health/Medical/Technology Writers

Apelon, a supplier of healthcare terminology tools and services, today announced release of version 3.0 of its Concept-Based Indexing and Retrieval (CBIR (image) CBIR - content-based information retrieval. ) content tagging software. With this new technology, primary sources, data syndicators, and information integrators can now quickly, automatically, consistently, and inexpensively index any text (including web pages) and leverage the resulting concept-based indexes for searching.

Since its initial release, Apelon's CBIR solution has assisted organizations in providing improved access to clinical information. Concept-based indexing translates phrases and words to their underlying clinical concepts, for example, "heart attack", "myocardial infarction myocardial infarction: see under infarction. " and "MI" would all index to the same concept. Concept-based retrieval translates the user's search words and phrases Words and Phrases®

to the same set of concepts. The result is consistent, comprehensive retrieval of the right healthcare information.

"This new version of Concept-Based Indexing and Retrieval demonstrates Apelon's continuing commitment to the evolution of terminology-enabled application solutions," said Stephen Coady, chief executive officer of Apelon.

Expected new applications of CBIR include

- the extraction of clinical facts from unstructured information

such as transcribed physician notes or the plain text fields of

CRO reporting forms.

- indexing the content of a chat room or a popular periodical as

"The healthcare industry is experiencing dramatic growth in the need to handle unstructured textual information," says Eric Mays, chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

of Apelon. "Apelon's CBIR helps organizations meet the challenges of managing content tagging and data mining with ease and efficiency," continues Mays.

The latest version of CBIR brings new power and flexibility to content tagging and information extraction In natural language processing, information extraction (IE) is a type of information retrieval whose goal is to automatically extract structured information, i.e. categorized and contextually and semantically well-defined data from a certain domain, from unstructured . It incorporates technology developed for Apelon's high-performance Distributed Terminology System (DTS (1) (Digital Theatre Sound) A digital audio encoding system used in movie and home theaters. Popularized by the movie Jurassic Park, the six-channel (5. ) vocabulary server technology, used by leading organizations such as Eclipsys, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , Kaiser Permanente, and Motorola. CBIR Version 3.0 also uses Apelon's advanced terminology knowledge base. While other terminology systems limit users to one or only a few vocabularies, the new Apelon Knowledge Base brings together all major healthcare terminologies including SNOMED CT, CPT CPT

Another unique feature of CBIR 3.0 is customizable subsets of terms, drawn from different vocabularies, that permit specialized tagging (and retrieval) for targeted clinical areas. CBIR 3.0 maintains its leadership in robust spelling correction, phrase completion, and term completion to enhance the information retrieval experience.

Apelon's CBIR is not a search engine, but a set of components that have been designed to integrate easily into a variety of data management and retrieval environments. CBIR includes comprehensive software development support including Java APIs, web server based interactive indexing, and full documentation. CBIR is customizable for local terminology modifications and extensions.
