, draws from elements of his own upbringing for the plot of Ice Time. The story's protagonist, Tony Perino, struggles in and eventually emerges from an ethnic Italian neighborhood in suburban Detroit. Tony finds success as a professional hockey player, but his abusive father never accepts or approves of his choices.

As Tony's career is winding down, he sets out to mend his relationship with his ailing father. After learning of his father's love for him, he fights his old feelings of anger and resentment to try to resolve their issues before his father's time is up.

Ice Time deals with some of the wonderful and attractive elements associated with an Italian-American upbringing, but also touches on darker and more sensitive themes like child abuse. The film is a reflection of Antonio's own life and represents his personal struggle to overcome the difficulties of his childhood.
