Drawing is both a vehicle for understanding and a gestural act itself (in this case for Austin City Hall). Recording an experience via drawing embodies much more than an analytical intention. In fact, my drawings aren't very analytical. When I draw historic buildings, they are inaccurate in many ways. My drawings are close, but they are not about detail or proportion. They are about the spirit of a building or a place, and the spirit embedded in the encounter and its transition. Drawing is a way of taking on a place, absorbing it, immersing myself in it. The drawings are essential to introduce a project to my team and having them live it with me; they constitute a critical starting point Noun 1. starting point - earliest limiting point

Clay models

In the case of clay models (below left), my team literally cuts out functional programmes in cardboard, to scale, in terms of footprints and volume. They're abstract squares or rectangles and I test them against the clay forms as I'm assembling and shaping the clay. The single reached 27 in the UK in its first week, selling only 9,000 copies and over 16,000 copies as of January 2007. The clay model melds the functional needs with an architectural solution addressing the multi-dimensional nature of the specific place. The clay medium not only ties the design to the earth, making the design part of the landscape rather than an object standing in it, but also provides a degree of malleability malleability, property of a metal describing the ease with which it can be hammered, forged, pressed, or rolled into thin sheets. Metals vary in this respect; pure gold is the most malleable. Silver, copper, aluminum, lead, tin, zinc, and iron are also very malleable.  at this early point in the process, accommodating the comments and observations of the client.
