Antioxidants include hindered phenols, mercapto-benzimidazoles, dihydroquinoline, butylated paraeresol, amines, and unsaturated acetals.

ALBEMARLE CORP.

Ethanox 702 sterically hindered diphenolic reportedly provides excellent temperature stability. It melts at 309 F and is FDA-approved for food-contact use in several substrates.

Ethanox 330 high-performance premium phenolic is noncoloring, extraction resistant, and FDA approved. It melts at 471 F and is biologically inert. Ethanox 398 is a nonhygroscopic, hydrolytically stable fluorophosphonite secondary antioxidant.

ALBRIGHT & WILSON AMERICAS

Trialkyl and dialkyl hydrogen phosphites are heat, light, and color stabilizers in polymers. Most popular are tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphite, triisopropylphosphite, trimethylphosphite, and bis (2-ethylhexl) hydrogen phosphite. Offer high solvency, slow oxidation, low volatility, and ability to combine with metal halides. Useful alone or as part of a stabilizer system in acrylonitrile, polyolefins, PS, ethyl cellulose, PVC, and alkyds.

AMERICHEM INC.

Concentrates contain antioxidants, uv absorbers, and other stabilizers. Available for almost all thermoplastics in cubes, pellets, and powders. Can contain stabilizer alone or with color and/or other additives.

BURLINGTON SCIENTIFIC CORP.

Burlox BHT (butylated hydroxytoulene) primary antioxidant for use in rubber, polyolefins, PS, thermoplastic elastomers, and coatings. Meets Food Chemical Codex requirements and is suitable for direct and indirect food contact applications.

CAROLINA COLOR CORP.

Custom formulations of antioxidants and metal deactivators in concentrates for most thermoplastics. Can be compounded with other additives.

CIBA SPECIALTY CHEMICALS 

Irganox high-molecular-weight hindered phenolics provide long-term oxidative and thermal stability. Irganox 1010 and 1076 have good compatibility with polyolefins and styrenics and are FDA-regulated. Irganox MD-1024 is a metal deactivator and all-purpose antioxidant. Irganox 1035, 1010 and MD-1024 are for wire and cable.

Irganox B-225 and B-215 low-volatility, heat- and hydrolysis-resistant additive blends reportedly offer excellent processing and long-term stability in polyolefins. Irganox LC blends of stabilizer systems for polyolefins used in color-critical applications combine antioxidants and high-performance processing stabilizers.

New FS systems provide polyethylene fibers and thin-section materials with reportedly exceptional resistance to gas fade, excellent initial color, and a combination of long-term thermal and uv stability, in a phenolic-free stabilizer package. FS 812, a new combination of hindered amine stabilizer, uv absorber and proprietary processing stabilizer, offers gloss and color retention for molded-in color applications.

Irganox HP products are synergistic combinations of phenolic antioxidants, phosphites, and a new Lactone processing stabilizer. The combination results in improved melt flow control, allows for higher temperature processing, and can result in improved overall processing, heat, and long-term stability of the polymer.

Irganox E a vitamin E antioxidant for use in food and medical packaging offers superior melt flow and color control, low migration, and superior extraction resistance. (See ad p. 379.)

CLARIANT CORP.

Sandostab P-EPQ high-molecular-weight phosphonite is stable to 662 F and especially soluble and compatible in polyolefins with very low densities. Broadly FDA-approved with reportedly low migration, it synergizes with sulfur and phenolic antioxidants and is not deactivated by fillers. Especially suited for low-water-carryover applications and polyolefins requiring long-term clarity retention. Used in all polyolefins, styrenics (PS, HIPS, and ABS), PC, polyester, polysulfones, polyether imides and other thermoplastics, maintaining retention of physical properties. It also inhibits burnout of pigments, aids in dispersion, and extends uv stability of recycled resins.

Hostanox SE 10 sulfur-containing costabilizer, Hostanox 03 hindered phenolic, and Hostanox OSP 1 metal deactivator are antioxidants offering enhanced heat stability and synergism when combined. Hostanox PAR 24 tris-phosphite is a secondary antioxidant and acts as a process stabilizer mainly for polyolefins.

Concentrates contain antioxidants, heat and light stabilizers, and lubricants in PS, polyolefins, and most other thermoplastics.

CYTEC INDUSTRIES INC.

Primary phenolic antioxidants include Cyanox 425, 1741, and 2246 for polyolefins and styrenics. Cyanox 1790 high-performance phenolic is said to offer excellent activity at one-half to one-third typical loadings for other primary phenolics. It reportedly offers excellent gas-fade resistance, melt stabilization, and low hot-water extractability.

Cyanox 2777 high-performance phenolic/phosphite blend is based on Cyanox 1790 and hydrolysis-resistant tris(2,4-di-t-butylphenyl) phosphite.

Secondary thioester antioxidants such as Cyanox LTDP, STDP, MTDP, 1212, and Cyanox 711 liquid synergize with primary phenolics for in-service stabilization of polyolefins and other polymers.

DOVER CHEMICAL CORP.

Dovernox solid hindered phenol antioxidants used as processing stabilizers for various polymers.

Doverphos liquid and solid organophosphites used as heat stabilizers for PVC, ABS, and polyolefins and also improve color stability in polyesters, polyurethanes, and alkyds.

EASTMAN CHEMICAL CO.

Hydroquinone derivatives are antioxidants for polyether polyols. Eastman Inhibitor OABH is a copper deactivator for polyolefins, especially in wire insulation. Tenox TBHQ and Tenox BHA are foodgrade antioxidants for PE packaging. (See ads pp. 328, 481.)

EVANS CHEMETICS HAMPSHIRE CHEMICAL CORP.

Evanstab thioester antioxidants for polyolefins, ABS, and other polymers are generally used with phenolic antioxidants for improved color stability, extended product life, improved melt stability, and reduced color formation during compounding. Products include dilauryl thiodipropionate, distearyl thiodipropionate, dimyristyl thiodipropionate, and ditridecyl thiodipropionate. Dilauryl and distearyl esters are FDA-approved for food packaging.

FAIRMOUNT CHEMICAL CO., INC.

Mixxim AO-20 and AO-30 high-molecular-weight hindered phenolic antioxidants provide processing and in-use thermal stability and color stability to plastics and elastomers. Mixxim CD-12 metal deactivator retards degradation of polyolefin wire and cable. Also reduces extruder corrosion by halogenated flame-retardant polymers.

Concentrated dispersions of all standard antioxidants come in a choice of compatible vehicles.

GE SPECIALTY CHEMICALS

Weston polymer additives include various liquid and solid organic phosphites that function as hydroperoxide decomposers, metal-complexing agents, and antioxidants. When used with primary antioxidants, phosphites offer increased resistance to heat and light. Weston 619 distearyl pentaerythritol diphosphite reduces discoloration in polyolefins and improves molecular weight control.

Ultranox 626, 627A and 641 high-performance secondary antioxidants offer cost-effective, optimum processing stability (color and melt flow), and gas-fade resistance to polyolefins, HIPS, ABS, PET, and other polymers. Ultranox 641 offers superior hydrolytic stability and hydrocarbon solubility.

Weston 619, Ultranox 626 and 627A have broad regulatory approval in PP, PE, PVC, and PC for food packaging. Weston TPP (triphenyl phosphite) is used primarily in PVC and epoxies. Weston TNPP (tris nonylphenyl phosphite) improves processing and properties in many polymers and has broad regulatory approval for food packaging. Ultranox 200 series of phenolics includes Ultranox 276 high-molecular-weight hindered phenol.

Standard blends of phosphite and phenolic antioxidants, as well as custom phosphite/phenolic/neutralizer blends.

THE GOODYEAR tIRE & RUBBER CO.

Nonstaining, nondiscoloring Wingstay phenolic antioxidants provide long-term protection against aging and degradation during storage. Suitable for food-contact applications. Wingstay amine antioxidant/antiozanants provide low volatility and resistance to side reactions. Included are products for high-temperature applications and resistance to weather and high ozone levels.

GREAT LAKES CHEMICAL CORP.

Range of phenolic and phosphite antioxidants for various polymers includes Lowinox TBM6 thiobisphenol antioxidant, which has a synergistic effect with carbon black, for use in PE cables and pipes. Lowinox 22M46 and 44B25 are bisphenols widely used in synthetic rubber and latices.

Anox PP18, 20, IC-14, and 70 high-molecular-weight hindered phenolic antioxidants used in polyolefins. Anox PP18 and Lowinox GP45 used to stabilize styrenic polymers. Alkanox 240 is a widely used hydrolytically stable phosphite.

Many products available in granulars/pellets, which are environmentally friendly free-flowing and low-dusting forms. Also nondust blend technology (NDB) where several different polymer stabilizers can be combined into a free-flowing, nondusting pellet form.

Naugard XL-1 high-molecular-weight phenolic antioxidant and metal deactivator is reportedly the only FDA-regulated product to provide both antioxidant and metal-deactivation activity.

Aromatic amines include Naugard Super Q for carbon black systems such as wire and cable, and geomembranes. Naugard 445 white, nonstaining secondary amine for ABS, polyolefins, nylon, and polyether polyols; Naugard SA high-temperature, high-performance stabilizer; and Naugard HM11 and HM22 phenolic/amine blends.
