ANTIOXIDANTS PRODUCT LINES REVIEWED

ACCURATE COLOR INC.

Offers a full line of primary and secondary antioxidant concentrates for use in most thermoplastics. Products can be compounded with other additives as required.

ACETO CORP.

Offers polyphenols for plastics and rubber.

AKROCHEM CORP.

Antioxidants under the Akrochem name include hindered phenols, butylated paracresol, mercapto benzimidazoles, dihydroquinoline, amines, and unsaturated acetals.

AKZO ENGINEERING PLASTICS

Produces antioxidant concentrates in pellets, chips, granules, and pulverized form. All commercial antioxidants are available combined with commodity and engineering thermoplastics.

ALBRIGHT & WILSON AMERICAS

Provides a wide variety of trialkyl and dialkyl hydrogen phosphites as heat, light and color stabilizers in polymers. Most popular of these are triisopropylphosphite, tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphite, trimethylphosphite and bis (2-ethylhexl) hydrogen phosphite. High solvency, slow oxidation, low volatility, plus the ability to combine with metal halides reportedly make phosphites useful stabilizers, either alone, or as part of a stabilizer system for polymers such as acrylonitrile, polyolefins, polystyrene, ethyl cellulose, PVC, and alkyds.

Antioxidants are supplied in pelletized concentrate form for thermoplastics stabilization. Standard and custom formulations are available.

CHEMICALS GROUP

A broad range of antioxidants is offered. Primary phenolics include Cyanox 425 and 2246, recommended for polyolefins and styrenics. A high-performance phenolic, Cyanox 1790, is said to offer excellent activity at one-half to one-third typical loadings for other primary phenolics. Cyanox 1790 reportedly offers excellent gas-fade resistance, melt-stabilization properties, and low hot-water extractability.

A new introduction is Cyanox 2777, a phenolic/phosphite blend based on Cyanox 1790 and the hydrolysis-resistant tris (2,4-di-t-butylphenyl) phosphite.

Also available in the Cyanox line are secondary thioester antioxidants, such as LTDP, STDP, MTDP, 1212, and liquid Cyanox 711. These products synergize with primary phenolics (e.g., Cyanox 1790), to produce in-service stabilization of polyolefins and other polymers.

AMERICHEM INC.

Concentrates are produced containing antioxidants, uv absorbers and any other specialty stabilizing additive. Concentrates are available for almost all thermoplastics in cubes, pellets, and powders.

Products may contain the specific stabilizer alone, or other additives and/or color according to specifications.

Irganox antioxidants are high-molecular-weight hindered phenolics that are said to provide long-term oxidative and thermal stability to a wide variety of plastics. Irganox 1010 and Irganox 1076 have good compatibility with polyolefins and styrenics and are FDA-regulated in numerous applications. Irganox MD-1024 is recommended as an effective metal deactivator and all-purpose antioxidant. Irganox 1035, 1010 and MD-1024 are offered for wire and cable.

Irganox MD-1024 is recommended for countering the detrimental effects of copper and other metals, which can cause discoloration and loss of physical properties in polymers. Product is said to be effective in extending the lifetime of PP, HDPE, LDPE and thermoplastic elastomer insulation that comes in contact with copper conductors. It reportedly can also inhibit metal-induced degradation in mineral-filled systems and coatings. Further enhancement of the processing and heat stability of polymers results when metal deactivators are combined with antioxidants 1010 and 1035.

Irganox B-225 and Irganox B-215 are members of a class of low-volatility, thermally and hydrolysis-resistant additive blends reportedly offering excellent process and long-term stability in polyolefins.

ALLIED PRODUCTS CORP.

Concentrates containing antioxidants, heat and light stabilizers and lubricants can be supplied in PS, polyolefins and most other thermoplastics.

DISCAS, INC.

Produces PP, TPU, HDPE, ABS, and other thermoplastic-based antioxidant concentrates made to special order in large or small quantities.

DOVER CHEMICAL CORP.

Company offers a new product line of organophosphites. Applications are as heat stabilizers in polyvinyl chloride, ABS, polyolefins, some rubber compounds and are used for better color stability in polyesters, polyurethanes and alkyd resins.

EASTMAN CHEMICAL PRODUCTS

Hydroquinone derivatives are used as antioxidants for polyether polyols, rubber and coatings. Company also supplies a copper deactivator, Eastman Inhibitor OABH, for polyolefins, especially for use in wire insulation. Tenox TBHQ and Tenox BHA are food-grade antioxidants used in PE for packaging applications. Eastman HQEE is a unique chain extender for high performance Thermoplastic Urethane (TPU) polymers, and Liquid-Cast urethane (LCU) systems.

CHARLES B. EDWARDS & CO. INC.

Offers custom formulating and compounding of antioxidants for specific color/polymer blends and FDA applications. Antioxidants come as powders, concentrate pellets, or liquids, with or without colorants. Other additives may also be included.

ETHYL CORP.

Offers its Ethanox line of antioxidants:

* Ethanox 702, a sterically hindered diphenolic, is said to provide excellent temperature stability at low price in thermoplastics. A crystalline powder with a melting point of 309 F, it is FDA accepted for food-contact use in several substrates.

* Ethanox 330, a high-performance premium product, offers noncoloring properties, extraction resistance and FDA acceptance. This crystalline powder, with a melting point of 471 F, is essentially biologically inert.

* Ethanox 703, a sterically hindered phenolic antioxidant incorporating an amine group, offers bifunctional activity. It is a crystalline powder with a melting point of 201 F.

* Ethanox 398 is a unique nonhygroscopic, hydroltically stable fluorophosphonite secondary antioxidant. It remains free-flowing in processing feeder line and retains full functionality even in water emulsion systems.

EVANS CHEMETICS DIV.

W.R. GRACE & CO.

Company's Evanstab thioester antioxidants, for use in polyolefins, ABS, and PS, are generally used with phenolic antioxidants to provide increased color stability during aging and extended product life. Other advantages include improved melt stability during polymer fabrication and reduced color formation during compounding.

Evanstab antioxidants include dilauryl thiodipropianate, distearyl thiodipropianate and ditridecyl thiodipropianate. The first two are FDA-approved.

FAIRMOUNT CHEMICAL CO. INC.

Offers Mixxim AO-30, a FDA-regulated, high-molecular-weight hindered phenolic, said to offer excellent processing and thermal stability to various plastics, elastomers, coatings, and adhesives.

Metal deactivators, Mixxim CD-12 and CD-14, are recommended for use in plastics that are in contact with metals such as copper in wire and cable. Mixxim CD-16 is targeted for 30% talc-filled polypropylene systems.

Manufactures various hindered phenolic antioxidants under the Oxi-Chek trademark. Oxi-Chek 114 is an effective stabilizer for rubber latices, olefins, and styrenics.

Manufactures a liquid antioxidant/ slip/antiblock concentrate for reprocessing film scrap. Product contains over 85% active ingredients.

Organic phosphite compounds:

* Weston polymer additives include a variety of liquid and solid organic phosphite compounds that function as hydroperoxide decomposers, metalcomplexing agents, and antioxidants. When used with primary antioxidants, these materials offer increased resistance to heat, light and oxidation. Weston 619 distearyl pentaerythritol diphosphite can significantly reduce discoloration tendencies of polyolefins and provides improved molecular weight control.

* Ultranox 626, a pentaerythritol diphosphite, is a hydrolytically stable, high-performance secondary antioxidant. This product offers optimum processing stability (color and melt flow), long-term aging, uv stability and cost performance for PP, HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, HIPS, ABS, PET and other polymers.

Both Weston 619 and Ultranox 626 have broad regulatory approval in polypropylene, polyethylene, PVC and polycarbonate for food-packaging applications.

Weston TPP (triphenyl phosphite) is for use primarily in PVC and epoxies.

Weston TNPP (trisnonylphenyl phosphite) additive improves processing and properties in many polymers. It has broad regulatory approval for food-packaging applications in many countries.

Hindered phenolic antioxidants: Also offered are several phenolic types in the Ultranox 200 series, which includes Ultranox 276 (octadecyl 3, 5 ditert-butyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinnamate) polymeric hindered phenol.

Blends: Blends of phosphites and phenolic antioxidants are also offered.

Company's rubber chemicals include nonstaining, nondiscoloring Wingstay phenolic antioxidants for use in rubber and plastics products. The materials are designed to provide long-term protection against aging, stability for polymer storage in varied conditions, and are said to have proven performance in food-contact applications. Wingstay amine antioxidant/antiozanants are said to provide low volatility and resistance to side reactions. Company manufactures a complete line of age resistors designed for high-temperature applications, stabilization, resistance to weather and high ozone levels, and overall protection.

Offers a variety of antioxidants and metal deactivators in plasticizer and PVC-based concentrates.

HIMONT U.S.A., INC.

New Xantrix Additive Delivery System incorporates up to 30% by weight of liquid or low-melting additives within a spherical polypropylene granule. This is done by an in-reactor process that does not involve extrusion compounding. The result is that the PP carrier resin (20 MFR) has lower crystallinity and therefore melts faster for easier dispersion, according to the company. Custom-formulated Xantrix ADS concentrates in quantities as low as 70 lb may contain antioxidants, uv stabilizers, and other additives.

HITECH POLYMERS INC.

Offers pelletized concentrates of antistatic agents, antioxidants, waxes, pigments, oils and other polymer additives for elastomers, engineering thermoplastics and adhesives. Products are made to customer's specifications.

ICI POLYMER ADDITIVES

Two phenolic and one amine antioxidant are commercially available: Topanol CA and Topanol 205, high-molecular-weight phenolics, are recommended for use in polyolefin, styrenic, plasticizer, and SBR systems. PTZ phenothiazine is recommended for the stabilization of monomer systems as well as polyolefins, styrenics, synthetic lubricants, PUs and rubber compounds.

KENRICH PETROCHEMICALS INC.

Company's titanate coupling agents are said to have their own stabilization capabilities in the form of antioxidant metal deactivation. Owing to their high dispersibility, their efficiency reportedly tends to be about 25 times that of materials such as alkyl triaryl phosphites.

MONSANTO CO.

Phenolic antioxidants include Santonox and Santonox R, used in polyethylene and other plastics; and Santowhite Powder for PP, PE, nylon molding powders, and other polymers.

MORTON INTERNATIONAL, INC.

INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS & ADDITIVES

Carstab thioester synergist antioxidants are used in PP, HDPE, and ABS. These include Carstab DLTDP (dilauryl thiodipropionate), and Carstab DSTDP (distearyl thiodipropionate), both of which provide highest performance when combined synergistically with hindered phenolic antioxidants to retard color formation and embrittlement from oxidative degradation during processing or long-term heat aging.

The antioxidants are permitted by FDA in food wraps and containers when used in accordance with the appropriate provisions.

NSO CO.

Formerly Neville Chemicals, company provides two phenolic antioxidants: a crystal from of DBPC (di-tert-butyl-paracresol) used to prevent oxidation in rubber and plastics; and BHT (butylated-hydroxy-toluene) for use as an additive approved for food contact. Levels used may range from 0.01% to 0.2%.

SANDOZ CHEMICALS CORP.

Sandostab P-EPQ is a high-molecular-weight phosphonite that is stable to 662 F. It is recommended for use in polyolefinds, polycarbonate, polyester, and engineering thermoplastic blends. It is very stable to hydrolysis and reportedly does not present the handling problems that are common with phosphites.

In engineering thermoplastics, the product reportedly allows recycling of polymer with no loss in physical strength; in high-strength application, it is further said to inhibit "burnout" of pigments. Sandostab P-EPQ has FDA approval for use in polyolefins, polycarbonate, and PS.

H.W. SANDS CORP.

Offers tert butyl hydroquinone, an antioxidant for use in nylon, PE and PP.

SCHENECTADY CHEMICALS INC.

Isonox 129 is a high-performance hindered phenolic crystalline antioxidant which can provide the process stability in polyolefins and styrenics. It has broad FDA approval for indirect food contact use.

Isonox 132 is a low-cost, liquid-hindered phenolic antioxidant with applications in the stabilization of liquid polyols, olefin streams and chlorinated parafins. It is also effective as a stabilizer for PVC, hydrocarbon resins and adhesives.

Polybatch additive concentrates are designed to improve specific properties. The range includes different carriers, and all possible modifications are offered: slip and antiblock, antistatic and uv resistance, antifogging, foaming, and antioxidant.

UNIROYAL CHEMICAL CO., INC.

The Naugard family of antioxidants includes hindered phenolics and bisphenolics, secondary amines, and phosphites, reportedly making it one of the broadest product lines in the industry. Phenolics such as Naugard BHT, Naugard 76 and Naugard 10 are used in polyolefins, HIPS, ABS, etc. Naugard 445, an FDA-approved, white nonstaining secondary amine, is used in ABS, nylon 6 and polyether polyols. Wytox 312 and Naugard P are general-purpose phosphites; Naugard 524, a high-performance solid phosphite, and phenolic phosphite blends such as 492 stabilize a variety of polymers, such as PP, PE, HIPS, and ABS.

Also available is Naugard XL-1, a high-molecular-weight phenolic antioxidant and metal deactivator. A high-performance antioxidant, it reportedly retards oxidative degradation of polymeric substances during processing and end use. It is reported to be the only FDA-approved product that provides both anti-oxidant and metal-deactivator stabilization.

Three hindered phenols, Naugawhite, Naugard SP and Naugard 529 are available. The first is a general-purpose product recommended for ABS; the second is an economical nondiscoloring, nonstaining product for polyolefins and HIPS. The third is a FDA-approved liquid used in a variety of applications, especially in the olefinic and styrenic markets.

R.T. VANDERBILT CO. INC.

Offers a broad line of Vanox phenolic and aromatic amine antioxidants for PE, PP, nylon, and flexible urethane polyols. A number of Vanox synergistic antioxidant systems and mineral deactivators are available for filled PP compounds. Products are said to improve high-temperature stability of filled compounds.

ARGUS DIV.

Offers antioxidants for polyolefins, ABS, and other polymer and copolymer systems. Both general-purpose and FDA-regulated grades are available, offering a wide range of cost/performance ratios. Among them are phenolics, phenolic-phosphites, and alkyl and aryl phosphites.

Metal deactivators, said to be particularly effective in PP and PE, are also available.
