In a placebo-controlled study involving 296 patients, carbinoxamme maleate 4 mg (Palgic) was found to be an effective single-agent antihistamine with a low side-effect profile. The most common side effect was mild sedation, reported by 14 of the patients. Patients found that the somnolence somnolence /som·no·lence/ (som´no-lens) drowsiness or sleepiness, particularly in excess. som·no·lence n. 1. A state of drowsiness; sleepiness. 2. effect disappeared after two to three days of continuous use. 87% of the patients in the study found the 4-mg dose to be optimal in relieving their allergy symptoms. Palgic is ne more sedating than some of the other major antihistamine brands. The recommended dose of Palgic is 4 mg prn for adults and 2 mg prn for children (ages 1 to 6 years). For patients with severe allergies, dosing may be increased to a maximum of 24 mg/day for adults (given in divided doses 6 to 8 hours apart). Maximum dosing for children is 0.4 mg/kg/day.
