The initiative, which kicked off yesterday on the first European Antibiotic Awareness day, is designed to drive home the importance of only taking the right medicine when absolutely necessary.

It also stresses the importance of following a doctor's instructions carefully.

 Dr Robert Cunney said: "Taking antibiotics when they aren't needed may mean that they won't work when you really need them for a serious infection.

"The more antibiotics we use, the more bacteria can change so that the antibiotics don't work any more."
