Anti-smoking bid 'from 1984'.


A HOSPITAL'S decision to broadcast anti-smoking messages to patients and staff through a loudspeaker loudspeaker or speaker, device used to convert electrical energy into sound. The Freedom Organisation for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco (Forest) said the move by a hospital in King's Lynn, Norfolk, sounded like an idea from the pages of George Orwell's novel 1984.

But bosses at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Queen Elizabeth Hospital can refer to one of several hospitals named after either Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom or Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother:

 said the "talking sign" was a legitimate way of enforcing their no smoking policy.

The message is being broadcast to patients and visitors at the front of the hospital and to staff at a rear entrance.

"It sounds very totalitarian - I think Orwellian is the right word for it," said a Forest spokesman.
