Anti-logging activists report being shot at with guns, arrows.

The Lane County Sheriff's Office says the activists' reluctance to reveal their identities has made it difficult to investigate.

In the most recent incident, witnesses have told the Lane County Sheriff's Office that on Saturday someone with a hunting bow shot at a tree sitter protesting a timber sale about 15 miles east of McKenzie Bridge, Lane County Sheriff's Lt.  by an arrow.

That follows reports by environmentalists that on Aug. 28 someone fired a gun aiming into the trees near activists in the same location.

None of the activists who say they have been targeted have been willing to be interviewed by officers or give their names, Slater said. Without first-hand information and victims' identities, officers say they have difficulty moving an investigation forward.

All the sheriff's office knows about the Aug. 28 shooting is what they've read on alternative media Web sites and a news release put out by the Guardians of the McKenzie Watershed, the group that has organized the tree sit at the Sten timber sale, a 450-acre partial cut currently being logged by the Freres Lumber Co.

Officers have more to go on with Saturday's bow-hunting incident, Slater said. Witnesses - two videographers working on a documentary - have filed a report saying that they heard arrows zing by them that afternoon. They also said they saw a white pickup truck, and that after the truck left, they noticed a water jug that had been up in the tree was on the ground with an arrow through it. Slater says deputies will investigate Saturday's incident, which they consider menacing, a misdemeanor. If the victim whose hand was grazed by the arrow comes forward to file a complaint, the charge could potentially become attempted murder In the criminal law, attempted murder is committed when the defendant does an act that is more than merely preparatory to the commission of the crime of murder and, at the time of these acts, the person has a specific intention to kill. , Slater said.

A coordinator for the tree sit, Shane Feinstein, said activists are reluctant to identify themselves for fear of retaliation RETALIATION.
