Anthrax poses new threat in cholera-hit Zimbabwe: charity


An anthrax anthrax (ăn`thrăks), acute infectious disease of animals that can be secondarily transmitted to humans. It is caused by a bacterium (Bacillus anthracis  outbreak has killed three people and threatens to wipe out livestock in northern Zimbabwe, compounding the nation's struggle against cholera cholera (kŏl`ərə) or Asiatic cholera, acute infectious disease caused by strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae that have been infected by bacteriophages.  which has killed hundreds, a charity said Monday.

Two children and one adult in the Zambezi Valley have died of the disease, which also threatens to kill 60,000 livestock in the region, Save the Children, a British non-government group, said in a statement.

Anthrax is a highly contagious contagious /con·ta·gious/ (-jus) capable of being transmitted from one individual to another, as a contagious disease; communicable.

"If the animal has been poisoned by anthrax, those children could die," she added, calling the outbreak the biggest in Zimbabwe in nearly three decades.

Authorities have imposed quarantines to prevent the disease from spreading, but Pounds said that Zimbabwe's economic collapse left the country with few means to enforce them.
