Organized in 1857, the Institute conducts various activities and programs to support the profession and enhance its public image, including periodically awarding the AIA California Council with the prestigious Nathaniel A. Owings Award for his role as a leader in sustainable building and his outstanding accomplishments in the preservation of nature in relation to California's built environment. Mr. Bernheim has been at the forefront of sustainable design for two decades, focusing his efforts and research on indoor air quality Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) deals with the content of interior air that could affect health and comfort of building occupants. The IAQ may be compromised by microbial contaminants (mold, bacteria), chemicals (such as carbon monoxide, radon), allergens, or any mass or energy stressor , energy efficiency, and resource efficiency, with far-reaching effects on government and industry throughout California and across the nation.
