Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the Anthem Foundation Award $650,000 to Virginia Free Clinics; Company Has Given More Than $8 Million Since 1992.
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has taken a leadership role in supporting the free clinics that provide health care to Virginia's uninsured. In fact, no other health plan or private company in the history of the state has supported the delivery of free medical care to those in need on the same scale or for the same length of time as Anthem. For more than a decade, Anthem has backed free clinics with money and manpower. Total direct financial support to the state's free clinics has been more than $8 million since 1992, including $650,000 this year.
This support has provided valuable operating funds to the free clinics, which annually serve more than 60,000 low-income, uninsured Virginians with general and specialty medical care, dental care, mental health counseling and prescription medications. All 46 clinics that are members of the Virginia Association of Free Clinics have been awarded $10,000 to help support operational expenses. The company also contributed $50,000 to support the Virginia Association of Free Clinics administrative needs.
This year, the Anthem Foundation awarded $140,000 in special health care grants to fund cancer screening programs. "Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Virginia and the uninsured and under-insured frequently do not have adequate access to cancer prevention, screening and early detection services," said Mark Cruise, executive director of the Virginia Association of Free Clinics. "These cancer screening grants will serve a vital role and we are grateful to Anthem for their long running support."
Clinics receiving the cancer screening grants are the Free Clinic of
Central Virginia, Free Clinic of Goochland, Lackey Free Family Medicine Clinic, Loudoun County Free Clinic, Rockbridge Area Free Clinic, Shenandoah County Free Clinic and Smyth County Free Clinic.
