Anritsu Uses JavaControl to Add Real-Time Web-based Management to MultiFlow 1000 Multilayer Switch.

Anritsu to Provide Dynamic Network and Device Management through HTML, Java and E-Mail with Full SNMP Support

Through a licensing agreement with Rapid Logic, Inc., of Alameda, Calif., Anritsu Corporation has developed a real-time, Java-driven network management application for its new MultiFlow(tm) 1000 multilayer switch. Using JavaControl(tm) technology, Anritsu gives its system customers dynamic control over the MultiFlow 1000 switch using any Java-enabled Web browser. This is the first Web browser-based management solution developed using Rapid Logic's newly released JavaControl Software Development Kit (SDK).

The MultiFlow 1000 is the first in a family of scalable, multilayer switching products offered by Anritsu's new LAN Products division in North America. It's a seven-slot, modular chassis that can handle up to 24 10/100 Mbps ports with Gigabit, ATM, andFDDI capabilities and full RIP and OSPF routing. Java-based management capabilities include real-time monitoring of switch indicators, configuring VLANs and router protocols, and displaying real-time statistics such as network traffic information both as data and as graphs.

The MultiFlow 1000 fits into HP OpenView-managed networks through SNMP while simultaneously providing HTML- and Java-driven, drill-down configuration, management and control through Rapid Logic's WebControl and JavaControl technology. The MultiFlow 1000 can also proactively alert network managers to problems via e-mail alerts through Rapid Logic's SMTP software. The Web server is fully contained within the switch.

And since it runs in any browser over the Internet, integrators and VARs can perform remote diagnostics, or an IT manager can remotely troubleshoot problems when alerted automatically by an e-mail. And we achieved this without any Java programming."

JavaControl enables network device vendors like Anritsu to quickly and easily incorporate Java-based configuration, management, monitoring and control capabilities into their products. By using JavaControl, Anritsu was able to develop a Web-based management interface to its MultiFlow 1000, complete with real-time display of LEDs and traffic, in weeks rather than months. And because JavaControl is built on Rapid Logic's OpenControl Backplane(tm) (OCB) architecture, Anritsu engineers can quickly and easily customize the management interface for future configurations and other MultiFlow products without having to rewrite or recompile any underlying source code.

JavaControl is the first integrated solution that allows vendors to achieve Java management of a network device using standard Java Bean applications without embedding a Java Virtual Machine in the device and without any knowledge of Java programming.

To overcome many of the common problems associated with developing embedded Java applications, the JavaControl SDK integrates into the OCB, Rapid Logic's "write once, present anyhow" object-inheritance framework for device element configuration, access and control. An Applet Broker stored on the embedded device handles all communication between the Web browser and the embedded device via TCP or UDP, minimizing the impact on the device. Developers can customize the look, feel and function of their products using standard Java Beans as development building blocks, dragging them onto a design palette. JavaControl comes with a library of preconfigured Java Beans to display graphs, charts, switches, gauges and other reporting elements although programmers can generate new Java Beans using conventional Java development techniques. JavaControl offers single-click integration with all major SNMP stacks and Real-Time Operating Systems including Integrated Systems, Inc.'s, pSOS and Wind River Systems' VxWorks.

The JavaControl Software Development Kit is immediately available through both royalty and prepaid pricing options, depending on a client's cash position, the scope of the license, and the nature of the product. Base licensing packages start at $45,000 per target product licensed. JavaControl can be purchased directly from Rapid Logic.
