Another word for chapters? An ASAE International Section e-mail list participant recently asked about alternative terms for chapters. Here are dialogue excerpts. * "The definitions we attach to the words we use to describe relationships with component organizations will not apply internationally. How an organization or entity describes itself from the perspective of its own backyard will differ greatly from country to country. Determine the nature of the relationship you wish to have with each entity, and call it something recognizable to all parties." * "The 102 local groups in 26 countries that are affiliated with us are members of the association--albeit in a nonvoting capacity, These groups are known as either a member society or a member chapter, the distinction being one of membership size." * "We have chapters in Canada, the U.K., Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, France, and Asia Pacific. No one seems to have a problem with the term chapter except the U.K. My members there think it sounds like a branch of the Hell's Angels. They have come up with the term local unit." * "We are required by law to use the word society to describe our chapter in Singapore. Interestingly, we have a chapter in the U.K. that has never mentioned any problem with the word chapter." * Other names: sections, divisions, national partners, branches, affiliates, area councils, and common interest groups. |
