I suggest that world maps with countries colored by some statistical feature often would be more useful if done on a cartogram cartogram

a map showing the distribution of a population by area.
that is a compromise between population and size of countries, rather than on a map with a simple Mercator projection ("A Better Distorted View:' SN: 8/28/04, p. 136). The problem of Earth's curvature mentioned in the article would not seem to be an overwhelming obstacle. It is interesting that the electoral college electoral college, in U.S. government, the body of electors that chooses the president and vice president. The Constitution, in Article 2, Section 1, provides: "Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors,  presidential-voting system in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  appears to amount to a rather good compromise between the relative importance of a region's population, or number of voters, and its size.
