According to the Act of Settlement of 1701, no person can accede to the throne, or remain in the line of succession, if he or she marries or becomes a Catholic. Anyone who "shall profess the popish religion or shall marry a papist" is disbarred, the Act states.

The Act has recently been the subject of considerable controversy because of its discriminatory nature, and some senior officials in the Church of England, including the Archbishop of York, would like to see the prohibition removed.
