Hynix has a 900-employee computer chip plant in Eugene, along with computer chip plants in South Korea.

After piling up $9.6 billion in losses and being bailed out by creditors over a span of 3 1/2 years, Icheon-based Hynix is reaping the benefits of a recovery in the semiconductor industry. Demand and prices for dynamic random access memory Dynamic random access memory (DRAM) is a type of random access memory that stores each bit of data in a separate capacitor within an integrated circuit. Since real capacitors leak charge, the information eventually fades unless the capacitor charge is refreshed periodically.  chips, or DRAM, are rising. Production shifts by rivals are also helping, some investors said.

``Hynix's finances have become more solid, and the company's been a big beneficiary of strong DRAM demand, especially since its competitors have shifted production toward other products such as flash chips,'' said Kang Shin Woo, chief investment officer at PCA (tool, programming) PCA - A dynamic analyser from DEC giving information on run-time performance and code use.  Investment Trust Management Co. in Seoul.

``Until a few years ago, most investors were pessimistic about (Hynix), but recently some investors and analysts have changed their views,'' Kang said.

Reflecting optimism of an industry recovery, Hynix shares have jumped 55 percent this year, making it the second-best performer among Korea's 200 largest companies.
