Another forgotten war?[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] With much of the nation's attention focused on the war in Iraq, the life and death struggle continues for our fighting men and women in Afghanistan. With a strengthening insurgency and the growing presence of the Taliban, the war in this economically devastated region has not been forgotten by those servicemembers pitched in a daily battle. Last year, photographer Tim Hetherington and writer/journalist Sebastian Junger travelled to the Korengal Valley, some of Afghanistan's deadliest acreage, on assignment for Vanity Fair magazine. While there, the duo captured the story of the men of Second Platoon, Battle Company, of the Second Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. According to the magazine, "Its men spend their days in a surreal combination of backbreaking labor--building outposts on rocky ridges--and deadly firefights, while they try to avoid the mistakes the Russians made."
