Another casualty among prepaid cash cards.

Citigroup Inc. earlier this year, dropped out of the prepaid credit-card account business, known as the Citi Cash Card, suggesting that the market is not as big as some financial service companies originally thought, according to news reports.

The Citi Cash Card joins two other failed prepaid credit cards: Cobaltcard (American Express Co.) and PocketCard (Visa). However, the Visa Buxx card is still in existence after three years.

Such cards typically have been obtained by parents for their children who are too young to have a credit history. Parents can load the value up to a predetermined limit, and then replenish it when the money runs out. The concept was particularly appealing to parents who had children at out-of-town colleges.
