Annual supplement of abstracts: SMA's 96th Annual Scientific Assembly.

The abstracts herein are provided to members and guests of the Southern Medical Association for their use during the Annual Meeting. These abstracts are scheduled for oral presentation and are published by specialty section. Abstracts of the Poster Presentations will appear in the December issue of the Journal.

The Southern Medical Association will install Dr. Michael G. Mackey as President during its 96th Annual Scientific Assembly in November in Washington, DC. He will be the fourth Arkansan to hold this office.

A native of Hot Springs, Arkansas Hot Springs is the tenth most populous city in the state of Arkansas in the United States of America, the county seat of Garland County, Arkansas, and the principal city of the Hot Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area encompassing all of Garland County. , Dr. Mackey received his bachelor's degree in biology from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. He received his doctorate in medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is part of the University of Arkansas System, a state-run university in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The main campus is located in Little Rock.  (UAMS UAMS University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences ) in 1973, where he also did his internship and residency in Internal Medicine. He later served at that school as a Fellow in Nephrology and on the school's Committee on Medical School Admissions as well as the Search Committees for Family Practice Department Chair and Dean of the College of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) is a non-profit, independent physician organization in the U.S. that certifies physicians who practice in internal medicine and its sub-specialties.  and also the Sub-specialty Board of Nephrology. He has been in the private practice of Nephrology in Jonesboro since 1978.

Dr. Mackey has served in various leadership capacities at St. Bernard's Medical Center in Jonesboro, including Chairman of the Department of Medicine. He is a former President and current board member of the NEA Clinic (formerly the Northeast Arkansas Internal Medicine Clinic). He has also served on the Advisory Board of the Arkansas State University Arkansas State University, at Jonesboro; coeducational; chartered 1909; named State Agricultural and Mechanical College, 1925–33. In 1933 the school became Arkansas State College, and in 1967 it achieved university status and adopted its present name.  School of Nursing, as well as on the Board of Directors of the Jonesboro Helpline. He has been an active reviewer for Postgraduate Medicine, Aviation Space & Environmental Medicine, and Southern Medical Journal.

Since 1981, Dr. Mackey has served as the Director of the Area Health Education Center in Jonesboro. The AHEC Program in Arkansas functions as the primary rural educational outreach arm of the UAMS campus in Little Rock. Over 200 CME CME

 hours per year are provided to health professionals in the Northeast Arkansas area. Dr. Mackey is particularly proud of the approximately 90 Family Practice Residents who have graduated the Residency Program in Jonesboro during his tenure. Over 90% of these physicians practice in Arkansas, serving to fulfill the mission of the AHEC Program, which is to improve the supply and distribution of health care professionals in Arkansas, with an emphasis on primary care, through community/academic educational partnerships, and thus to increase the quality of health care for all Arkansans.

Dr. Mackey has been chosen as one of the Outstanding Young Men of America, is a Past President of the UAMS Alumni Organization (Caduceus caduceus (kədy`sēəs), wing-topped staff, with two snakes winding about it, carried by Hermes, given to him (according to one legend) by Apollo.  Club), and is a member of the American College of Physicians The American College of Physicians (ACP) is a national organization of doctors of internal medicine (internists), physicians who specialize in the prevention, detection and treatment of illnesses in adults. , the Arkansas Medical Society, the American Society of Nephrology, the Renal Physicians Association, and a number of other professional organizations.

 and Councilor from Arkansas, and has served on numerous committees, including the Executive Committee of the Council. He is also a member of SMA's President's Club and the Society of 1906.

Dr. Mackey is an accomplished pilot, and is the President of MacAviation, an aircraft sales, leasing, and charter company. Dr. Mackey is married to SMA Auxiliary Member Cathy Mackey. They have one son, Connor. Dr. Mackey also has a daughter, Kerrie Pickering of Little Rock.
