Part of a longstanding and useful series, the articles of this year's volume review the current literature and summarize the state of research on 13 topics, introduced by a memoir article by Alexander Dalgarno Alexander Dalgarno, born January 5, 1928, is a British physicist who is Phillips Professor of Astronomy at Harvard University. He was educated in mathematics and atomic physics at University College, London.  of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It consists of the Harvard College Observatory and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The Center is located at 60 Garden Street. . Among the topics featured are water in the solar system solar system, the sun and the surrounding planets, natural satellites, dwarf planets, asteroids, meteoroids, and comets that are bound by its gravity. The sun is by far the most massive part of the solar system, containing almost 99.9% of the system's total mass. , supernova remnants at high energy, the Crab Nebula, evolution of debris disks, and nuclear activity in nearby galaxies. Each article is clearly organized in outline style and well illustrated with graphs and photos, most of them in color, making this an excellent resource for undergraduate and graduate students as well as specialists. Written by astronomers and physicists in the US and Europe, each article concludes with a lengthy bibliography. An author index of past issues from the series is included; the volume lacks a subject index.
