Annual bibliography of film studies--2008.

INTRODUCTION

In the past we have tried to note distinctive trends in recent film criticism, some reflected in the journals that come and go, some in the special issue topics of various journals, and others in the sheer numbers of articles that cluster in what we might term currently "fashionable" categories. For 2008 there are a number of such noteworthy developments. One trend that deserves special attention is the interest in adaptation studies, prompting the appearance of Adaptation, sponsored by Oxford University Press, and the Journal of Adaptation in Film, published by Intellect Books. Both attest to the increased focus on adaptation theory, an approach that not only updates the sort of literature-to-film discussions that dominated much early film study, but that promises to provide valuable insights for a variety of cross-media and cross-screen studies. In this same vein, we should note the appearance of the new British journal Science Fiction Film and Television. Part of a larger initiative in science fiction studies emerging from Liverpool University Press, the journal points up an increased interest in linking television and film as kindred "screen studies," an effort also reflected in several recent anthology publications. Also, this edition of the Annual Bibliography includes for the first time the relatively new Studies in Hispanic Cinema. It is one of a group of film journals published by Intellect, offering articles covering the world-wide scope of Spanish and Spanish-influenced cinemas, all written in English.

Given the increased number of such special interest film journals, we might expect to find fewer special issues in established publications. However, 2008 again saw a wide variety of such efforts. Among them we might especially note: Asian Cinema; symposium on Sri Lankan cinema, Journal of Popular Film and Television's reassessment of the Biopic, a Journal of Film and Video issue on ethnographic film, Canadian Journal of Film Studies; issue focusing on disability in film, Critical Studies in Media Communication's number on racial representation and reality television, the Historical Journal of Film, Radio, and Television's edition on the BBC in all of its media incarnations, and our own special issues on Korean Cinema and TV and on the Coen brothers.

We can also roughly gauge the shifts in critical fashion by observing the sheer numbers of articles as they cluster in our usual bibliographic categories. The most noteworthy trends for 2008 scholarship are a drop of more than 50% in the total entries on "Documentary" and a similar gain in the number of pieces on "Screenwriting." Additionally, "Directors" articles once again showed a marked decline, while entries in the areas of "Actors/Actresses," "Genre," and "Video" were considerably higher than last year.

Not subject to such trends, the Annual Bibliography retains the format that we have employed for many years, including those categories that have demonstrated their usefulness. As in the past, each English-language film article receives a single full citation, based on the current MLA style, although many of the entries are also crossreferenced to one or more additional categories. Where necessary, entries also receive a brief annotation. Except in the cases of the "Actors/Actresses" and "Directors" categories, entries are alphabetized according to the authors' last names, and we abbreviate journal citations according to the "Periodicals Indexed" listing that follows. Also, we continue to invite any suggestions our readers might have for streamlining the format, adding additional journals, or employing other categories, and we do solicit the titles of entries for next year's edition.

Finally, I would note that the production of this research tool remains very much a group effort. There are a number of colleagues who have helped out, that I have called upon to furnish missing journals, but I especially want to thank our Editorial Assistant and colleague Lauren Glen for her bibliographic efforts and my co-editor Gerald Duchovnay for similar help and for his frequent check-ups on and gentle nursing of the Annual Bibliography to completion.
