Annual Best Buy Recycling Event Will Give Consumers Place to Retire Old Electronics.


Twin Cities Consumers Can Bring TVs, VCRs, Computers, Monitors to Best Buy Corporate Headquarters in Richfield June 22-23

MINNEAPOLIS -- Best Buy will hold its seventh annual consumer electronics recycling event on Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23, 2007 at its corporate campus in Richfield. The event offers area residents a place to dispose of To determine the fate of; to exercise the power of control over; to fix the condition, application, employment, etc. of; to direct or assign for a use.

This event is part of Best Buy's commitment to help its customers nationwide make safe, responsible decisions when disposing of old and unwanted consumer electronics. Since these recycling events were introduced in 2001, they have collected more than 2,500 tons of e-waste. In 2006, Best Buy sponsored or hosted 40 recycling events.
WHAT:          Best Buy annual consumer electronics recycling event

WHEN:          10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
               Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23

WHERE:         Best Buy Corporate Campus
               7601 Penn Avenue South
               Richfield, MN


The following items will be accepted at this year's event: televisions, video recorders See DVR, DVD-R and DVD drives. , computer monitors, CPUs and computer peripherals, scanners, printers, fax machines, inkjet and printer cartridges, stereo equipment, and phones (both landlines and cellular). There is a fee of $10 for computer monitors and televisions up to 27 inches, and a $20 fee for any console or big screen television.

Items that cannot be accepted are major appliances A major appliance is usually defined as a large machine which accomplishes some routine housekeeping task, which includes purposes such as cooking, food preservation, or cleaning, whether in a household, institutional, commercial or industrial setting.  such as refrigerators, microwaves, washing machines, air conditioners and smoke detectors.

"The Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and  has estimated that consumers will retire two million tons of e-waste this year - from cell phones and rechargeable batteries to televisions and computers," said Brenda Mathison, director, environmental affairs for Best Buy. "And as the largest retailer of consumer electronics, we have a responsibility to help consumers make smart decisions when disposing of these items."

In addition to the recycling collection event, Best Buy has several established recycling programs for consumers:

* A grant program to assist community and nonprofit organizations Nonprofit Organization

An association that is given tax-free status. Donations to a non-profit organization are often tax deductible as well.

Notes:
Examples of non-profit organizations are charities, hospitals and schools.
 that collect e-waste;

* Free recycling drop-off kiosks at each store entrance for DVDs, CDs, PDAs, cell phones, rechargeable batteries and inkjet cartridges;

* Best Buy will haul-away old televisions and appliances for a nominal fee when new appliances and new major electronics are delivered; and

* Mail-in cell phone recycling when customers purchase new cell phones.
