"Demand for important, reliable, and timely scientific, technical, medical, and professional information continues to increase worldwide. We are committed to providing the information our customers need and supplying it via the delivery mechanisms they prefer, whether in print or electronic form," said Ellis.

"Our objective in launching Wiley InterScience is to exploit fully the potential of online publishing by providing enhancements to our journals and other technical and reference publications to make them more useful to research scientists and practitioners," he continued. These enhancements include desktop access, ease of navigation, broad-ranging content, sophisticated search tolls that can be customized, and the capability to retrieve, annotate annotate - annotation , and print individual abstracts and articles.

Access to Wiley InterScience will be open without charge to customers for a limited period of time. During this initial pilot period, Wiley will invite its authors, editors, subscribers, and registered guest users to provide feedback as the company develops its Internet journal publishing activities. The marketplace feedback will enable Wiley to enhance and enrich its service offering to make it of broad use to the scholarly community.

After the initial period of open access, Wiley InterScience journal content will be available on a subscription basis. "Because many libraries and institutional subscribers will want both print and electronic access, at least initially, we will offer customers a number of options. Our objective is for Wiley InterScience to make technological and economic sense for our customers as well as for us," explained Ellis.

Important features of the Wiley InterScience service, which will be located at http://www.interscience.wiley.com, will include a search capability across the entire Wiley journals list (tables of contents and current abstracts) for articles of interest, and a personal home page on which each user can activate automated au·to·mate
