ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1999--

Dantz Development Corporation announced today the Retrospect 5.0 line of backup software See backup program.

Backup software should provide ways to specify what files get backed up and to where.
products for Windows(R). Retrospect's patented, state-of-the-art technologies are designed to provide 100% reliable restores of Windows and Macintosh(R) servers, desktops, and notebooks.

"Retrospect works flawlessly," explained Gregory Collins, systems administrator at Oracle Corporation, who uses Retrospect to protect the data on more than 200 notebook computers. "I've had outstanding performance and reliability with a range of backup devices. Most important, I've always been able to restore."

Retrospect's advanced architecture and powerful features make it reliable and easy to use. IncrementalPLUS(TM) and Snapshot technology allow for faster, safer backups, and accurate, single-pass restores. True verification and multiple, rotating backup sets, each complete in itself, provide additional levels of security.

"Retrospect does a lot of things right," said Philip Mendoza, Research Analyst for System Management Software at International Data Corporation. "It's powerful and easy to use, with incremental backups to multiple backup sets and an innovative scheme for prioritizing and backing up notebooks automatically, whenever they connect to the network."

Retrospect 5.0 for Windows will ship to resellers and be available from the Dantz online store at www.dantz.com on September 24, 1999. A fully featured, time-limited demo will also be available for download from the Dantz website.

Premier storage and system companies including Fujitsu Europe, Imation, LaCie, MicroNet, Sony, and Yano Electric include Retrospect with their backup hardware. For a complete list of Dantz's strategic partners, please refer to www.dantz.com.

KEY TECHNOLOGIES

Retrospect has several unique technologies that differentiate it from other backup products and provide key benefits in terms of reliability to customers.

IncrementalPLUS Backups

Retrospect employs a sophisticated backup process, called IncrementalPLUS, which combines the speed and bandwidth conservation of traditional incremental backups with the ease of restoration provided by full backups. IncrementalPLUS finds and backs up new or changed files based on a file selection criteria, instead of relying on the unreliable archive bit See archive attribute.  or dates. This enables Retrospect to perform incremental backups to multiple backup sets with each set containing a copy of all files necessary for a complete restore.

Snapshot Single-Pass Restores

Every time Retrospect backs up a volume, it takes a Snapshot of that volume's exact state, including a list of all files, security privileges, and registries. During a restore, Retrospect uses the most recent Snapshot to rebuild the volume exactly, including the registry, with only a single pass over the backup media. Even after many IncrementalPLUS backups, Retrospect only needs to perform a single restore operation.

Backup Server A computer in a network used to store copies of files from client machines or other servers. Such servers typically have their disks set up in a RAID configuration to provide fault tolerance. See backup program, RAID, SAN and LAN free backup. (TM) Manages Notebooks

Notebooks represent a point of vulnerability in any network backup environment. Retrospect's Backup Server function makes notebook backup easy, reliable, and automatic, even in a DHCP environment. Backup Server intelligently prioritizes computers in need of a backup, and recognizes when notebooks connect to the network. No matter how infrequently a notebook appears on the network, Retrospect's Backup Server will make sure that its data is backed up. -0-
