Eastern National has announced that the winner of the first William C. Everhart Award is Robert T. Hayashi. Hayashi is an assistant professor of English at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, where he teaches Asian American A·sian A·mer·i·can also A·sian-A·mer·i·can

Hayashi received the award for his article entitled "Transfigured Patterns: Contesting Memories at the Manzanar National Historic Site Manzanar National Historic Site: see National Parks and Monuments (table). ." The article was published in the Fall 2003 issue of Public Historian There are two categories of public historians. The first, and most widely understood definition of a public historian is a practitioner of public history. This definition holds that public historians are generally regarded as those people who create history for public consumption; . This award is named for William C. Everhart, who has made many contributions to both the National Park Service and Eastern National.

Articles qualifying for nomination may deal with any scholarly research related to national parks and are not limited to history. Nominations are made by the editor or managing editor of the publication, and only three articles may be nominated by each publication regardless of the number of issues published during the year. A call for nominations is announced annually in August, and the deadline for submission is October 15 of each year.
