The Manuscripts Department in the Academic Affairs Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a public, coeducational, research university located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States. Also known as The University of North Carolina, Carolina, North Carolina, or simply UNC  is please to offer six Southern Studies Research Stipends for use in the summer of 2003. The awards are $500 each and require on-site research in the Manuscripts Department between June and October 2003.
   Joel Williamson Research Stipends: The Manuscripts Department will award
      two stipends with a preference for research projects in African
      Americana or race relations.

   Guion Griffis Johnson Research Stipends: The Manuscripts Department will
      award two stipends with a preference for research projects in women's
      history.

   John Eugene and Barbara Hilton Cay Research Stipend: The Manuscripts
      Department will award one stipend with a preference for research in
      literary studies.

   J. Carlyle Sitterson Research Stipend: The Manuscripts Department will
      award one stipend for a research project in southern studies.


The Manuscripts Department administers virtually all archival and manuscript materials held by the Academic Affairs Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The department holds over 20 million items, including manuscript materials, photographs, and audio and visual recordings. Graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars who are considering or currently conducting a Southern Studies research project that would benefit from use of the resources described above are eligible. You do not have to be an enrolled student or be presently affiliated with an academic institution. Former Southern Studies Research Stipend recipients are ineligible for the award.

Please complete and submit an application form with a one-page prospectus of your research project. You may include a letter of recommendation from an advisor or colleague, but it is not required. On your application form, please identify at least one collection in the Manuscripts Department that you intend to use for your project. The William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies in the Department of History at Southern Methodist University Southern Methodist University, at Dallas, Tex.; United Methodist; coeducational; chartered 1911. The school's facilities include laboratories for electron microscopy and stable isotopes, a museum of paleontology, and a graduate research center.  in Dallas welcomes applications for three research fellowships, known as the Bill and Rita Clements Research Fellowships for the Study of Southwestern America, for 2003-2004. Individuals in any field in the humanities or social sciences doing research on Southwestern America are invited to apply. The fellowships are designed to provide time for senior or junior scholars to bring book-length manuscripts to completion.  and to participate in Clements Center activities. Each fellow will receive the support of the Center and access to the extraordinary holdings of the DeGolyer Library. Fellowships carry a stipend of $37,000, health benefits, a $2,000 allowance for research and travel expenses, and a publication subvention. Fellows have the option to teach one course during the two-semester duration of the fellowship for an additional stipend.

Applicants should send a copy of their vita, a description of their research project, and a sample chapter or extract (if the sample is from a dissertation, please include the introduction), and arrange to have letters of reference sent from three persons who can assess the significance of the work and the ability of the scholar to carry it out. The Clements Center for Southwest Studies also offers research grants to applicants who live outside the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area to encourage a broader and more intensive use of the special collections In library science, special collections (often abbreviated to Spec. The Clements Center also offers the William P. Clements Prize for the Best Non-Fiction Book on Southwestern America, to promote and recognize fine writing and original research on the American Southwest. The competition is open to any non-fiction book, including biography, on any aspect of southwestern life, past or present, with a 2002 copyright.
