 and Progressive Era (SHGAPE) announces its biennial competition for the best published article dealing with any aspect of United States history between 1865 and 1917. The prize is open to new scholars, defined as graduate students or Ph.D.s who have received their doctorate since 1994 and have not yet published a book. The article must have appeared in a journal dated 2003 or 2004. The winner of the prize will receive a $500 award. An article may be submitted for consideration by the author or by others (e.g., a journal editor). The deadline is December 1, 2005. The John Carter Brown Library John Carter Brown Library: see Brown, John Carter.  will award approximately twenty-five short- and long-term research fellowships for the year of June 1, 2006-July 31, 2007. Short-term fellowships are available for periods of two to four months and carry a stipend of $1,800 per month. These fellowships are open to foreign nationals as well as to U.S. citizens who are engaged in pre- and postdoctoral or independent research. Graduate students must have passed their preliminary or general examination at the time of applications and be at the dissertation-writing stage. It should be noted that the library' s holdings are concentrated on the history of the western hemisphere during the colonial period (ca. 1492-ca. 1825), emphasizing the European discovery, exploration, settlement, and development of the Americas, the indigenous response to the European conquest, the African contribution to the development of the hemisphere, and all aspects of European relations with the New World, including the impact of the New World on the Old World. Research proposed by fellowship applicants must be suited to the holdings of the library. All fellows are expected to relocate to Providence and to be in continuous residence at the library for the entire term of the fellowship.

The Agricultural History Society is pleased to announce its resumption of annual meeetings. The 2006 meeting will be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at Cambridge; coeducational; chartered 1861, opened 1865 in Boston, moved 1916. It has long been recognized as an outstanding technological institute and its Sloan School of Management has notable programs in business,  in Cambridge, June 15-17. The Winterthur Museum and Country Estate 2006-2007 Research Fellowship Program offers residential fellowships available for scholars pursuing topics in American history and art, decorative arts, material culture, and design. National Endowment for the Humanities senior scholar grants, Lois F. McNeil dissertation grants, and short-term grants will be awarded. Stipends range from $1,500 to $3,333 per month.
