Annie May victory maintains the Fowler tradition; SIDEWAYS GLANCE.


IMPERIAL COMMANDER'S gallant effort against Kauto Star Kauto Star (born 19th March 2000) is a French bred National Hunt racehorse, who is currently trained by Paul Nicholls in England.

After a successful beginning to his jumping career in France, Kauto Star (pronounced "Kor-toe") has had an extremely successful career in England.
 in the Betfair Chase The Betfair Chase is a Grade 1 National Hunt horse race in the United Kingdom for five-year-old and above horses. It is run over a distance of 3 miles (4,828 metres) at Haydock Park Racecourse in November. There are eighteen fences to be jumped in the race.  at Haydock brought to mind the last conversation I had with the late and much-missed John Fowler, a few weeks before his untimely death in a freak farm accident last December.

In characteristically enthusiastic fashion, John had rung to remind me that Imperial Commander, who had just captured the Paddy Power Gold Cup The Paddy Power Gold Cup is a Grade 3 National Hunt horse race in the United Kingdom for five-year-old and above horses. It is run over a distance of 2 miles 4½ furlongs (4,124 metres) on the Old Course at Cheltenham Racecourse in mid November. , had won his only point-to-point at Summerhill, the venue of the Meath Foxhounds and Tara Harriers fixture, staged against the picturesque backdrop of the Fowler family home at Rahinstown.

On Sunday, John's memory came even more poignantly into focus when his widow, Lady Jennifer Fowler, known in Irish racing circles as 'Chich', sent out Annie May to win a mares' novice hurdle at Musselburgh. It was an important success for the Anshan mare, who comes from the family of Champion Hurdle winners Morley Street and Granville Again. It is great to see the Fowler tradition being maintained.
