A HUDDERSFIELD student is off to The Big Apple.

Anne Tordfoff, a first-year BSc Counselling Studies student at the University of Huddersfield The University of Huddersfield is a university in the town of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, UK. She saw an advertisement for the Winant and Clayton Volunteers in the Guardian newspaper.

After encouragement from her tutor, psychology lecturer Sarah Robinson, Anne applied and was successful in securing a short term placement in New York later this year.

The Winant and Clayton Volunteers is a two-way volunteer community service partnership between the USA and the UK.

The organisation grew from the dreams of John GWinant, then US Ambassador to the Court of St. James the usual designation of the British Court; - so called from the old palace of St. James, which is used for the royal receptions, levees, and drawing-rooms.

Crossing the Atlantic by ship in 1948, Americans began the Winant Volunteer adventure by helping British families rebuild bombed-out churches and community centres in blitz-torn London.

Since 1959, British counterparts, known asClaytons, have travelled to the USA to provide similar services and enjoy the cultural exchange experience in reverse.

Anne said: "I applied for the placement because I didn't want to waste my summer.

"Hopefully I'll get a chance to put into practice some of the skills I've learned here.

"I feel that my experience out there will help me when I return for my second year and possibly in my future career.

Coalition for the Homeless is the oldest not-for-profit advocacy group focused on homelessness in the United States.
, one of America's oldest advocacy organisations, helping homeless men, women, and children.

"I'll be working five days a week with a two-week break at the end to travel.

"There are nine Claytons travelling from across the UK and we all fly out together.

"We have to pay for our own flights, but everything else, such as accommodation, food and travel to and from work is covered by the organisation."
