Language spoken by about 125 million people on the islands of Japan, including the Ryukyus. The only other language of the Japanese archipelago is Ainu (see Ainu), now spoken by only a handful of people on Hokkaido, though once much more widespread.

Among other benefactors, Waldorf has been the recipient of many large donations from the John K. , Professional of the Year in International Studies Education for 2006-2007. While inclusion in Cambridge Who's Who is itself an honor, only one member in each discipline is named Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year. In 1950, Mitchell was invited to Japan as one of the first missionaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Evangelical Lutheran Church can refer to many different Lutheran churches in the world. Among them are the following:

. During her 32 years there, Mitchell helped start a church and Sunday school Sunday school, institution for instruction in religion and morals, usually conducted in churches as part of the church organization but sometimes maintained by other religious or philanthropic bodies.

In England during the 18th cent.
, teaching English and bible classes. Upon returning to the U.S., she directed Waldorf's Rassmussen Hall from 1983-1988, enlightening students about Japanese culture by hosting a Japanese room and serving Japanese meals. In 1988, she became Waldorf's international student advisor, acting as "grandmother" to hundreds of international students. From 1994 until her retirement, Mitchell taught Japanese. She also coordinated Waldorf's International Orientation Program, the Global Fest and Cultural Show, a host family program, and speaking engagements for international students.

Mitchell received her A.A. from Waldorf in 1958 and her B.S. in education from Augustana College Augustana College is the name of two colleges in the U.S., and the former name of one in Canada, all founded by Scandinavian immigrants:
  • Augustana College (Illinois)
  • Augustana College (South Dakota)
  • Augustana University College (Alberta)
. She has served as Waldorf Auxiliary president, Alumni Board president, Waldorf Sunday speaker, and Mission Conference speaker. She is also active in the Christian Women's Club and the Mission Committee at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
