Every year, Mrs. Randall takes her class to the Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. To be chosen to lay the wreath, each child must write a letter stating why he or she should be selected. Anna longs to be the wreath-bearer and is determined to write a letter that will convince her teacher that she should be. She writes a winning letter-from the perspective of her seeing-eye dog, telling how dogs have always helped soldiers during wars. Until nearly the end of the book, the reader remains unaware that Anna is blind. The book includes information about dogs in war, about the machine Anna uses to write her letter, and shows that perseverance and strength of spirit can win over disabilities. Ages 4-12
