Animals pay a high price for survival.

Byline: LES HORTON

I have always been against zoos, for it has never seemed right to take animals from their natural habitat, ship them across the world and shove them into cages for the viewing pleasure of the public.

There are those who argue that zoos keep alive species that might otherwise die out, but they would not be dying out but for human encroachment An illegal intrusion in a highway or navigable river, with or without obstruction. An encroachment upon a street or highway is a fixture, such as a wall or fence, which illegally intrudes into or invades the highway or encloses a portion of it, diminishing its width or area, but .

Others may argue that through zoos,

children in particular get to learn about wildlife they might otherwise never see and, as a result, learn to respect and

value it.

There is something to that, but again the price in the suffering the animals must go through is too high.

But despite my misgivings, one of our loves in Bahrain is to visit the Al Areen Wildlife Park and Reserve, chiefly for the pleasure it gives our toddler Noor to run around in the fresh air and to see all the birds and animals.

Such parks do at least keep some of the animals in open areas, where they are free to roam, in an environment as close to their natural habitats as possible.

But many are kept in pens or cages and although we enjoy the visit, I always feel a sense of guilt that these living things Living Things may refer to:

  • Living Things (album) by Matthew Sweet

Noor's favourite is the solitary camel and she runs up to its enclosure with a fistful fist·ful

He (I think it's a he) always looks so lonely and, while I wouldn't wish another animal in captivity, it is a shame he hasn't at least got a mate.

A new addition to the reserve are the foxes and on our latest visit we were keen to see them - then wished we hadn't.

One was running round in circles endlessly, in a cage not big enough for one, let alone so many and I walked away depressed that such beautiful animals had been imprisoned im·pris·on
tr.v. im·pris·oned, im·pris·on·ing, im·pris·ons
To put in or as if in prison; confine.

I am not knocking the park, it has done a great deal to preserve species native to the Arab world “Arab States” redirects here. For the political alliance, see Arab League.
