This is the fourth Book of the Year produced by the World Association for Animal Production. It opens with four articles surveying the development of livestock production systems in African, North America, and South America and providing a brief history of the Japanese Society of Animal Science. It then presents 13 articles reviewing recent research in the fields of molecular genetics, reproduction sciences, animal growth and development, immunology and endocrinology, lactation biology, milk-cheese products, beef cattle, sheep and goats, swine, camelids, ostrich and rhea farming, rabbits, and fur animals. Five articles presented under the heading of "Contemporary issues" then proceed to address milk recording, animal farming and geographical information system services, productive achievement in commercial rhea breeding in Argentina, the existing level of uptake of molecular techniques in animal breeding, and camelid breeding in the Andean region.
