This is a story of a young man coming to terms with his life after his father's death. Kit comes back home after ten years in Australia to the nature preserve his father owned and ran before he died. At first he has no intention of picking up where his father left off. Kit muddles through his own mixed feelings about the preserve and the people (especially the several beautiful women) in and around it, and re-evaluates his life in Australia.

The author does a fine job capturing the accents and nuances of the local dialect dialect, variety of a language used by a group of speakers within a particular speech community. Every individual speaks a variety of his language, termed an idiolect. , as one might expect since this is obviously familiar territory for him. He has just the right amount of bemusement be·muse
