Pollington continues his long series of books on Anglo-Saxon life, language, and literature by focusing on high-status burials at the time when the heathen religion was most threatened by the march of Christianity through northern Europe. He begins by summarizing mound burial in general and chamber burial in particular set against its Germanic background from such perspectives as the meaning of chamber burial, chamber burial traditions, decline, and later history. Then he surveys a number of particular mounds and barrows, among then Saltwood, Bloodmoor Hill, Cuddesdon, Swallowcliffe Down, and Benty Grange. Appendices present descriptions of famous mounds in Anglo-Saxon literature and explain the meaning of some barrow place names. There is no index.
