Angling: HERE'S HOPING! ANDREW WILKINSON rounds up all the activity on the local angling scene Fingers crossed for tomorrow after call-offs COARSE ANGLING.Byline: ANDREW WILKINSON ANGLERS hope that the Tees is in reasonable condition for tomorrow's Yarm Fur and Feather match. The match is keenly anticipated by anglers who were frustrated when last weekend's Lealman Trophy match was postponed. The river was carrying several feet of heavily coloured floodwater flood·wa·ter n. The water of a flood. Often used in the plural. floodwater n → aguas fpl (de la inundación) floodwater n , and the banks were so slippery and dangerous that the decision was made to postpone the event, which will probably take place in January. After a milder drier week, and with limited rain forecast overnight, the Tees should fish quite well tomorrow, although there may still be some melted snow water, which is not conducive to good sport. However occasional bream are expected to show to feeder tactics, and any anglers who latches onto a couple of them is likely to be in the frame as big weights are not anticipated. Occasional perch, dace and roach may make up weights, with both feeder and float tactics worth a try. Other matches tomorrow include the Darlington Brown Trout brown trout Prized and wary European game fish (Salmo trutta, family Salmonidae) that is favoured for food. The species includes several varieties (e.g., the Loch Leven trout of Britain). The brown trout is recognized by the light-ringed black spots on its brown body. Coarse Fish Cup on the Tees between Coniscliffe and Sockburn; the Billingham Christmas Cheer at Over Dinsdale on the Tees, and, on the stillwaters, The Woodland Lakes Open. On the Coniscliffe stretch of the Tees grayling grayling, common name for a brilliantly colored fish belonging to the genus Thymallus, of the family Salmonidae (salmon family), and closely allied to the smelt. Graylings are found chiefly in clear, cold, fresh waters of the Northern Hemisphere. could oblige to float-fished maggot maggot: see blowfly; fly; larva. , and anyone who finds a shoal could be in the frame. Chub Chub, in the Bible Chub (kŭb), in the Bible, an African people. This may be a textual error for Lub (i.e., Lubim). chub, in zoology chub: see minnow. may figure for those who draw a good peg. Bob Trees of the Thornaby club caught five chub in a pleasure session on the club's water at Eryholme. He fished bread to take fish to 3lb for a net totaling around 13-14lb, though he pointed out: "The river was two feet up and rising slowly, though I fished a peg that tends to produce. As a pleasure angler you can pick your peg - and that makes all the difference in tough conditions. In a match you are stuck with whatever your draw." The stillwaters provide a good, and more comfortable, option when rivers are flooded. Catches are nowhere near as big as in the warmer months, though 40lb nets of carp to 5lb are possible. Float tactics will work, but legered corn is a favoured cold weather method. |
