Angling: Great catch from Stonebridge Lakes.Byline: By David Carrick Stillwater trout anglers have had some fine sport at Stonebridge Lakes this week. The top fish was a 16lb 8oz rainbow landed by Tom Clayton Tom Clayton (circa 1880 - 1909) was an Australian jockey of the early 1900's. Born in a Sydney harbourside suburb on the north shore, Clayton was indentured to famous Randwick trainer Isaac Earnshaw and rode for him some of the best horses of the time. , of Great Lumley Great Lumley is a village in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, in England. Dave Mordue, also from Durham, took a rainbow of 16lb 4oz and other anglers to catch doubles were Steve Greenwood (14lb) and Gary Lawrence (13lb), both from Spennymoor. Andrew Stephenson, of Great Ayton Coordinates: Great Ayton is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire on the edge of the North York Moors in England. On the Hergill Lake, Ernie Craster and Peter Crowe, from the Hartlepool area, caught 22 and 21 fish respectively. Competitive anglers will be interested in the Open Singles competition at the fishery on Sunday, February 29. Contact the fishery for details on 01609-748818. NThe only fish I have heard of from the salmon and sea trout scene was a fresh run 2lb 8oz sea trout, caught by Alan Woolley from Newcastle on the Tyneside Anglers Syndicate waters on the Whiteadder. The fish took a 1 1/2 in Waddington with the river level still 2ft 2in above summer level. The race is still on for the first salmon of the season on both Tyne and Coquet co·quet intr.v. co·quet·ted, co·quet·ting, co·quets 1. To engage in coquetry; flirt. 2. To trifle; dally. . Bywell Syndicate came close at the weekend when a couple of spring salmon were lost in what was still a big water. The Coquet is coming into play and the first fish of the season may not be too far away now. Lies such as the White Post, Streamfoot, Grandstand, Bushes and Bett's Hole spring to mind as likely producers of the Coquet's first of the season. After the big spate last week, the Tweed had runs of sea trout and possibly some spring salmon could well have entered the Till. The Till also had a big flood last week and was falling into good condition earlier this week. When conditions settle, some spring sea trout could be caught. Contacts for Till fishing include Ford and Etal Estates (01668-216223), Fenton Estates (01668-216216) and Tiptoe Farm (01890-882177). Tweed and Till are fly only until Monday when spinning is allowed. NA reminder for anglers that the third Northern Game Angling Show takes place this Sunday at Nissan Sports and Social Club, Washington, from 10am-4pm. Entry is pounds 3 and many exhibitors will be present with plenty of tackle to try and clothing etc. |
