The seas have flattened since the weekend and sport has deteriorated, although there still are one or two decent fish around.

Barry Tweddle, of the Seaton Sluice SAC, used a cocktail of crab and squid to take a cod of 12lb 10oz from Alnmouth. There have also been cod of 12lb from Downovers. This is a low water mark so expect heavy tackle losses.

Blyth Pier has produced cod to 5lb and the River Tyne lots of undersized codling, but also a few in the 1 1/2 -2lb range, mainly on rag and lug.

At South Shields, the best fish was 9lb and, at the beginning of the week, fair numbers from 1 1/2 -2lb. Best cod from Roker Pier was 8lb and also some decent whiting, mainly at night.

One item of boat news - Phil Edmonds fished 200 yards offshore at Cullercoats and, using lug and sprat sprat: see herring.
