Angling: Bernard clinches double delight; SEA SCENE.


BERNARD WESTGARTH sealed the Saltburn club's summer series, and also caught the heaviest round fish of the season.

He finished third in the final match with three mackerel mackerel, common name for members of the family Scombridae, 60 species of open-sea fishes, including the albacore, bonito, and tuna. They are characterized by deeply forked tails that narrow greatly where they join the body; small finlets behind both the dorsal and  for 119cm, including the biggest of the series at 1lb 14oz, the fish having three goes at his bait before being hooked.

He beat 22 other anglers to win overall with 248 points, finishing ahead of Stephen Aldred (224), Peter Race (203) and Guy Mason (175).

The final match, fished at Sandsend, was won by Peter Race, who caught six flounder flounder: see flatfish.

Any of about 300 species of flatfishes (order Pleuronectiformes). When born, the flounder is bilaterally symmetrical, with an eye on each side, and it swims near the sea's surface.
, two mackerel and a weever for 212cm. One of his flounder, at 26cm (seven ounces) was the biggest flatfish of the match.

Nick Westgarth was runner-up with two flounder, two mackerel and a weever for 164cm to finish one place ahead of his father.

Six of the nine who fished measured in a total of 10 flounder, nine mackerel, a coalfish and two weevers.

The biggest flatfish of the series was a flounder of 2lb 3oz caught by Stephen Aldred.

It's been a poor summer for mackerel, but they have returned close to shore on calmer seas and spring tides.

Only five anglers fished the match, but they totalled 41 mackerel and 34 whiting, as well as a single flounder.

The only angler not to catch was Peter Race, who tried out Redcar and the South Gare to no avail, while the other four headed for Saltburn Pier where the shoals were found.

Daniel Redling won with 11 whiting and 15 mackerel for 18lb 8.25oz, including the biggest fish of the match, a mackerel of 1lb 4oz.

Shern Hambley was second with nine whiting and 16 mackerel for 17lb.

Guy Mason finished third with the flounder, six whiting and six mackerel for 7lb 12oz, with the fourth angler to weigh in being Andy Clark, whose eight whiting and four mackerel totalled 6lb 6.75oz.

The next match is on September 17, a low water rover fished from the South Gare to Whitby from 7-10pm.

THE Redcar N and G club's first Winter League match of the season was won by Andy Bunn, one of the club's newest members. He caught three whiting, including the heaviest of the match at 14.2oz, from the South Gare for a total of 1lb 15oz.

Richard Warburton was runner-up with three whiting for 1 lb 13oz, while Alan Oliver was third with three whiting for 1lb 11oz. Both also fished the gare.

Fifteen members fished with eight weighing-in 13 whiting and one mackerel.
