SNODGRASS The family name Snodgrass is said to originate from lands in the parish of Irvine, Ayrshire, known as Snodgrasse, or Snodgers, which were rented out in plots. Both forms are recorded in Ayrshire and in Glasgow between the 13th and 16th centuries.

THREE Coventry anglers are spearheading a campaign to abolish the licence fee they have to pay before they can enjoy the sport.

The cost of their annual rod licence has increased rapidly over the past decade and now stands at more than pounds 20.

Alec Bamford, aged 56, from Wyken, Brian Wilkinson, aged 59, from Radford, and Ken Dumbleton, aged 56, from Courthouse Green, regularly fish lakes and rivers around Coventry but say they are sick of forking fork

out the annual fee for the privilege and getting back little in return.

The licence confers only the right to use a rod and line and does not convey any permission to fish a water. Anglers have to pay further charges for that.

The trio, who say their sport should be treated the same as any other, will lobby the House of Commons House of Commons: see Parliament.  to have fishing licensing laws repealed.

They hope to collect over a million signatures, which they will present to MPs.

Mr Bamford said: "Our argument is that it is the only sport in the country where you legally have to have a licence."

To sign the petition, call 024 7644 8336 or 7659 9714.

REVENUE from rod licence fees goes to the Environment Agency to protect and improve stocks and habitats and encourage people to take up fishing.
