Andromedia's Likeminds Personalization Technology Serves as Levi's Personal Online Fashion Consultant.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1999--

Levi's Online Store uses original patented collaborative

filtering software to recommend latest Levi styles and enhance

e-commerce shopping experience

Powerful LikeMinds (tm) personalization technology from Andromedia, Inc. is helping to enhance the online shopping experience at Levi Strauss & Co.'s recently launched Online Store www.levi.com.

Based on patented collaborative filtering technology, the software helps the Levi's (r) brand get closer to its customers by delivering product offerings that are more relevant to their personal tastes and style.

Andromedia invented and holds the original patents in the field of collaborative filtering. The patents cover LikeMinds highly accurate form of predictive modeling technology that analyzes past customer behavior and preferences, identifies like-minded individuals, and makes personalized product recommendations in real time.

"Levi Strauss & Co. has been a strategic partner in every sense of the word," says Steve Kanzler, Andromedia Vice President of Marketing. "Our relationship goes back almost two years. And they deserve credit for being willing to pioneer new and innovative ways to deploy collaborative filtering. Levi taught us a great deal about the online retail market and allowed us to develop a number of new innovations to the technology. For instance, it was at the Levi site that we proved that lifestyle preferences can be used to deliver accurate product recommendations. In fact, the site has been so successful that Levi is now in the process of making a major upgrade to the site to handle the phenomenal traffic. We are extremely pleased with our collaboration to date and look forward to further strengthening and broadening our relationship."

Clothing Recommendations "Right On"

In a first-of-its-kind application called Style Finder, the Levi's site uses the LikeMinds technology to give customers recommendations about the latest Levi's looks that fit well with their personal style, based on how they answer a series of questions about music, fashion, and fun. Customers tell Style Finder what type of music, sports, and "looks" they like -- such as grunge or hip-hop -- and Style Finder will look for what clothing choices other customers with the same preferences made, then predict which Levi's products are most likely to fit the customer's individual style and needs.

According to Levi Strauss & Co., 74% of customers who have used the technology said the clothing recommendations were "right on."

Delivers Better Service, Drives Revenue

LikeMinds personalization technology helps Levi Strauss & Co. improve the level of customer service they can deliver and gives them a substantial competitive advantage in the online fashion e-commerce market. The technology has also increased the amount of time customers are spending online resulting in the number of page views growing by a factor of 10. Additionally, the number of products viewed is between three and seven times greater causing sales rates to jump. Lastly, customer response has been very positive toward the personalized experience and toward the quality of product recommendations as evidenced by customers returning to the site two to five times more often.

Online Personalization Breakthroughs

Andromedia's relationship with Levi Strauss & Co. has resulted in the achievement of many "firsts" in online personalization. The Levi's Online Store represents the first personalization effort in the fashion industry to utilize collaborative filtering for e-commerce. In addition, by using customer preferences in fashions, music and activities to predict preferences for specific clothing products without knowing what clothing products the customer has selected in the past, the Levi's brand site represents the first "cross-category" use of collaborative filtering for e-commerce anywhere.
