, ITALY -- Androclus Therapeutics, a biotechnology company developing novel products and technologies for treatment of diseases involving the immune system immune system

Cells, cell products, organs, and structures of the body involved in the detection and destruction of foreign invaders, such as bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells. Immunity is based on the system's ability to launch a defense against such invaders.
, such as autoimmunity, cancer and infectious diseases, has been granted U.S. Patent No. 6,787,154, entitled, "Artificial Antigen Presenting Cells." This patent is an important addition to the company's revolutionary technology platform known as "T-Cell Capture" (TCC TCC The Car Connection (web site)

).

Artificial antigen presenting cells, the structure of which closely resembles their physiologic equivalents, can induce T-cells to react in a physiologic fashion. This is achieved in an entirely artificial system, in which the composition and relative concentrations of the reagents are fully controllable. The patent claims artificial antigen presenting cell compositions that are broadly applicable to treatment methodologies capable of eliciting up- or down-modulation of an immune response immune response

in patients with a need for such modulation.

Applications of TCC technology are based on its ability to isolate and manipulate antigen-specific T-cells. Future diagnostic applications of TCC technology include monitoring and evaluation of clinical trials in Inflammation, Autoimmunity and Oncology therapeutic areas, as well as evaluation of vaccine effectiveness. TCC technology has already been applied to monitoring and evaluation of Phase I/IIa clinical trial of Androclus' AT-001 peptide for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Potential therapeutic applications of TCC technology include ex vivo therapy ex vivo therapy Molecular medicine A therapy in which cells or genes are modified out of the body and reintroduced into a person with a genetic disease. "Androclus' TCC technology platform enables ex vivo modulation of T-cell responses in an entirely artificial system. The applications are truly far-reaching," said Salvatore Albani, M.D., Ph.D., Androclus scientific founder. "I am pleased that this patent has finally been awarded as it provides a now recognized basis for expanding our patent portfolio with additional patents and significantly strengthens our intellectual property position in the TCC area," said Igor P. Androclus is looking for strategic partners for further development of TCC technology for both diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

About Androclus Therapeutics

Androclus Therapeutics is a private biotechnology company with a mission to discover, develop and bring to commercial fruition novel products and technologies for treatment of diseases involving the immune system, such as autoimmunity, cancer and infectious diseases. Androclus' revolutionary technology platform enables up- or down-modulation of patients' immune responses, without the broad immunosuppression immunosuppression
