Andrew joins Wireless LAN Interoperability Forum; supports delivery of open interface specification and certification for multi-vendor wireless LANs.ORLAND PARK Or·land Park A village of northeast Illinois, a residential and manufacturing suburb of Chicago. Population: 53,300. , Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 27, 1996--Andrew Corp. announces its membership of the Wireless LAN A local area network that transmits over the air typically in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz unlicensed frequency band. It does not require line of sight between sender and receiver. Wireless base stations (access points) are wired to an Ethernet network and transmit a radio frequency over an area Interoperability Forum (WLI WLI Weblogic Integration (Bea Systems) WLI Weekly Leading Index WLI Whole Life Insurance WLI Buoy Tender, Inland (USCGC) WLI Work Load Indicator WLI World Learning Incorporated WLI Where Lines Intersect Forum). The forum currently has 18 members whose mission is to deliver open interface specification and certification for multi-vendor wireless LANs. The group has already demonstrated interoperability between a wide range of multi-vendor wireless LAN products. "Our focus is on providing our customers with superior communications products and services," said Gregory Koss, vice-president/general manager of Andrew Corp.'s network products division. "Customers want the convenience of installing one wireless network that supports data, voice and paging applications from different suppliers. The forum addresses current interoperability requirements and paves a path for future growth and choice." Andrew Corp. is developing and introducing its own in-building multi-service communications system In telecommunication, a communications system is a collection of individual communications networks, transmission systems, relay stations, tributary stations, and data terminal equipment (DTE) usually capable of interconnection and interoperation to form an integrated whole. which will provide interoperability without compromising functionality. Interoperability Certification To assist the building of multi-vendor wireless LANs the WLI Forum has demonstrated interoperability and will be implementing a program to test interoperability between supplier's products. The certification includes providing test suites and sponsoring the actual testing. The test suites are defined around a complete set of functionality including basic communication, roaming, and power management. The objective is to offer customers true interoperability without compromising functionality. Relationship to IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields. 802.11 The WLI Forum charter targets real interoperability between wireless LAN products in 1996 and beyond, including: opening existing interfaces, defining and executing interoperability tests and increasing market awareness. This activity complements the IEEE 802.11 objective of developing new interface specifications. As new standards emerge, including 802.11 in the 2.4 GHz band, the WLI Forum will incorporate them into its charter activities. -0- Andrew Corp. is a global supplier of communications systems equipment and services.
