Andrew introduces high performance, source routing bridge.

ORLAND PARK Or·land Park

A village of northeast Illinois, a residential and manufacturing suburb of Chicago. Population: 53,300.
, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 14, 1995--Andrew Corp. -- pioneers in Token Ring A local area network (LAN) access method developed by IBM. Conforming to the IEEE 802.5 standard, Token Ring uses a token ring access method and connects up to 255 nodes in a star topology at 4, 16 or 100 Mbps.  solutions -- introduces the BridgePort/7806(TM), a flexible, high-performance bridge that integrates SRT (1) (Source Routing Transparent) An IEEE-standard that provides bridging between Ethernet and Token Ring networks. Ethernet LANs use transparent bridging, and Token Ring LANs use source route bridging (SRB).  (Source Routing Transparent) and SR (Source Routing) in a low profile, stand-alone, rack-mountable enclosure.

The BridgePort/7806 is a local bridge capable of forwarding 18,000 frames per second for 64 byte frames. This capability assures that the enduser will have the processing power to support high-speed LANs. This level of processing speed also ensures no bottlenecks at the bridge and the power to handle inter-ring access for multiple file transfers and interactive applications.

BridgePort/7806 is fully compatible with IBM products and comes equipped with dual flash EPROM which enables efficient upgrades by allowing operating code updates while the 7806 is actively bridging. "The BridgePort/7806 affirms the Andrew commitment of providing products that combine superior technology with plug and play simplicity," says Peter Galvin, director of strategic marketing.

For network management, the 7806 fully supports IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  Network Manager/Netview which provides feedback on the status of the Token Ring LAN, and bridges itself and the workstations on the LAN to the LAN NET Management. The 7806 is fully SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  compliant, providing management information to the SNMP network management stations. Finally, utilizing the Andrew BridgeManager program provides worldwide central management of all Andrew bridges from a single PC.

Other features of the BridgePort/7806 include:

-- Advanced logical filtering to decrease network traffic and

increase security.

-- Spanning Tree Algorithm An algorithm used in transparent bridges that dynamically determines the best path from source to destination. It avoids bridge loops (two or more paths linking one segment to another), which can cause the bridges to misinterpret results.  support for transparent bridging and

Auto Single Route feature to eliminate broadcast frames.

-- Diagnostic displays for fast and easy feedback of network and

bridge status.

The BridgePort/7806 is shipping and is available directly from Andrew or through Andrew Approved Business Partners. List price of the 7806 is $4,395.
