Andrew Receives NEC Order for Nextel Brazilian Buildout.

NEC will use the Andrew-supplied equipment in its infrastructure for Nextel's network expansion in Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Curitiba, and Porto Alegre. This portion of the network's expansion is due for completion by the end of 2001.  for more than two years. The network will provide customers with guaranteed all-digital cellular service, text/numeric paging capabilities, Nextel Direct Connect digital two-way radio, and wireless Internet services.

NEC is supplying the entire infrastructure for the Nextel project, including communications towers, civil works, equipment shelters, power systems, microwave and RF systems, and installation services. The Nextel network uses iDEN technology, developed by Motorola. This technology operates in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz and 1.5 GHz radio bands. iDEN wireless technology gives superior sound and transmission quality using packet-based transmission methods. For the end user, the result is crisp and clear high-quality voice communications. The system is also secure with safeguards to prevent calls being overheard and an advanced security system to prevent numbers from being cloned.
