(Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft) Nuremberg, chose RADIAX cable for its technical features, cost-effectiveness, and installation benefits.

Over 5,000 meters of fire-retardant 7/8-inch RADIAX cable has been used to create an RF distributed communications system that is installed in the tunnels and along the platforms of the new Nuremberg airport's metropolitan transportation extension. The new communications system provides track-to-train communications and secure radio channels to enable the fire, police, security, and emergency services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  to communicate in the tunnels, platforms, and security exits.

The RADIAX cable used in the installation is a highly flexible cable with a very small bending radius. This enables the operator to avoid unnecessary cable connections, improving the quality of the system and cutting down investment and installation costs.

The Nuremberg airport metropolitan system extensions will open on 27 November, 1999. The new communications system will extend the existing cable-based RF-distribution system, which already deploys over 25,000 meters of 7/8-inch RADIAX cable in the metropolitan tunnels.

Mr. Wolfgang Hagen, System Planner Communication Systems at VAG, said, "We have been using Andrew radiating cable for our RF distribution system since 1988. Our experience is that Andrew is a reliable supplier with high-quality products and services." Hagen continues: "The 7/8-inch RADIAX cable's characteristics, such as its small bending radius, fire-retardancy, high bandwidth for multi-service applications and its low attenuation Loss of signal power in a transmission.

About VAG

Nuremberg has its place in German public transport history, for it was between this city and the town of Fuerth that Germany's first locomotive `The Adler' ran in 1835. Today, technical innovations in the sphere of public transport continue to be a matter of importance for Nuremberg's transport authority, the Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (VAG) founded in 1959.

It was VAG that lead-managed the first rapid-fueling system for buses running on compressed natural gas Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a substitute for gasoline (petrol) or diesel fuel. It is considered to be an environmentally "clean" alternative to those fuels. It is made by compressing natural gas (which is mainly composed by methane (CH4  (CNG CNG Compressed Natural Gas

). In 1998, VAG inaugurated a facility to fuel one of Germany's largest CNG-powered bus fleets. Currently, the company is testing the prototype of the diesel-electric bus made by MAN. Also, a fully-automatic underground line (the U3) is planned. The U3 will become the third of the three underground lines operated in Nuremberg by VAG. Since the U3 will share part of its route with the metropolitan airport extension (U2), mixed operation had to be planned for the initial section of the joint tracks.

VAG also operates trains on six lines and buses on 62 routes. Each year, some 1,000 VAG drivers transport about 153 million passengers on the Nuremberg public transport network. VAG employs 2,000 people and is the largest employer in Nuremberg.
