Andrew Corporation (NASADQ: ANDW) recently inked a multimillion broadcast equipment order from Cosmos Broadcasting Corporation. Cosmos owns and operates 15 network affiliated television stations across 11 states in the US. The deal was signed during the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) 2001 tradeshow in Las Vegas on Wednesday April 25, 2001.

"We have collectively developed our plans for individual DTV (Digital TeleVision) Transmitting TV using digital signals. The major DTV standards are ATSC (North America), DVB (Europe) and ISDB (Japan). All three use MPEG-2 video compression and Dolby Digital audio compression. DVB and ISDB also include MPEG audio compression.  conversions so that we can save money through group purchasing," said Steve Smith, Vice President Engineering and Technology, Cosmos Broadcasting Corporation. "In addition to offering a 10-year RF system warranty, Andrew was the only company that had the depth and breadth of product to meet the unique requirements of individual Cosmos stations."

Antennas: Six of the Cosmos stations are replacing their NTSC (National TV Standards Committee) The committee that developed the television standards for the U.S, which are also used in Canada, Japan, South Korea and several Central and South American countries. Both the committee and the standard are called "NTSC.  broadcast antennas with dual NTSC/DTV antennas. Andrew is supplying a variety of antenna replacements including 4- and 5-around panel arrays and dual batwing Noun 1. batwing - one of a pair of swinging doors (as at the entrance to a western saloon)

 antennas as well as Andrew TRASAR(R) broadcast antennas, including the new Tri-Channel TRASAR antenna. The Tri-Channel TRASAR allows up to three adjacent TV stations to share a single traveling wave antenna, meeting the needs of multistation broadcast applications.

Filters: Several of the stations are installing Andrew dual channel Trinity(TM) combiner/mask filters. The Trinity is a cost-effective, high power mask filter for DTV broadcasting and is suitable for upper or lower adjacent channel combining. A number of stations will also use Andrew VHF (Very High Frequency) The range of electromagnetic frequencies from 30 MHz to 300 MHz.  combline filters for dual channel combining

Also, Andrew is providing a unique patent pending switching system that enables any station on a multistation antenna to test off-air without affecting other stations. The Andrew technique provides greater switching and testing flexibility with less hardware.

Stations owned and operated by Cosmos are: WSFA-TV, Alabama; KAIT-TV, Arkansas; WALB-TV, Georgia; WFIE-TV, Indiana; WAVE-TV, Kentucky; KPLC-TV, Louisiana; WLB-TV and WLOX-TV, Mississippi; WWAY-TV, North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States.
